What dormant season! Hoey is still chasing snakes
SOURCE: The Champion Post
20 August 2007
When it comes to assisting in the removal of snakes and other reptiles from homes or properties within the Parkes Shire there aren't too many situations that `spook' Derek Hoe.
Hoey as he is affectionately referred to by locals has been Parkes' un-official snake catcher for some years.
However, a task undertaken at the Tichborne Silos recently was one that he undertook with a great deal of apprehension to say the least.
Employees of Canowindra Produce were at the site undertaking general cleaning and maintenance operations in preparation for this year's canola and barley harvest when one of the employees got more than he bargained for.
Having climbed down a tunnel and with another employee holding a spot-light from above he started sweeping.
All of a sudden he felt something around his leg.
Yelling to his offsider to provide more light he was horrified to see a Brown snake wrapped around his leg with its fangs embedded in his thick working boot.
Kicking the snake clear he was `out of there quick smart.'
The emergency call went out to Hoey.
While he wasn't too sure about the situation, he bit the bullet so to speak, donned the safety harness and went down into the pit.
Our intrepid reptile catcher caught not one but two brown snakes who made a lie of being docile during the winter period. They became very aggressive and it took all of Hoey's expertise to bag them both.
But the story doesn't end there. Before heading down into the second pit the employees shone their beam - this time discovering a `very docile' goanna.
Hoey was just as nervous about this task as a goanna can be very aggressive with very dangerous claws. However, after a bit of prodding it was determined the goanna was dead.
It all made for a very early morning adrenalin rush for all concerned.
Canowindra Produce purchased the Tichborne silos three years ago and are hoping for a turn around in conditions this season.
